Eastern Sierra Armory is located in Mammoth Lakes, CA, home to the largest biathlon race in the United States. Clayton Mendel, the owner of ESA, started building guns as a hobby in his garage. Good friends with the director of the Mammoth Lakes Winter Biathlon, they both share the same desire to see the United States become a serious competitor in international biathlon competition. However, Clayton began to realize that although a lot people were being exposed to the sport of biathlon across the nation, if they couldn’t afford the equipment, the biathlon community would never grow. Thus began the pursuit of an affordable and domestically manufactured biathlon rifle.

A lot has changed since Clayton debuted the first two concept rifles in spring of 2011 at the 4th Annual Mammoth Lakes Winter Biathlon. Over the past few years, a lot of time, effort, and money was spent to bring the business to the point where it is now; poised to bring a volume of new products into the community. The first fruit of those labors appeared in the fall of 2012 the release of the Gen2 stocks for the Savage MkII series of rifles.

ESA welcomed two new members to the team: Joe Hamlin as the Manufacturing Manager and Aleksandra Gajewski as the Business Manager.

In February 2014, ESA announced Gen3 stock production, which will include stocks for Savage, Anschutz, and Izhmash rifles.

Eastern Sierra Armory, although participatory in other firearms related activities, shall remain focused and committed to bringing new and innovative products to market in an effort to grow the sport of biathlon in countries where lack of popularity means limited resources to expose and train potential athletes.
